Hey, what follows is a tale of me being creepy, trespassing, experiencing the greatness that is a nighttime stroll through the snow, and a rant I felt like making. I suppose it also serves as a confession of sorts for the trespassing and such. Not all of my original ideas made it into the paper, but they probably didn't have much purpose in relating to what was happening on my walk at the time. Or I just couldn't remember why I was thinking that so the description of the moment would be rendered useless.
It's kinda emo, but I don't know why,I just felt like writing down my experience. The Journal Title is taken from this song, btw
[link]Oh, and there's a map I drew of my walk to act as a visual aide,
[link]Oh, and the initial paragraph acts to introduce yourself to what I did the rest of the night.

Let me tell you about my night.
Around 6 I went over to my friends house for some pizza and board gaming, long time friends of the family. Chuck also had his coworker, Don over for the event meaning we could get some four player Settlers of Catan action going. I dont mean to speak for the rolls, but my general strategy of 2 settlements into cities, expand to ports, Dev. Carding it up with two additional cities worked like a charm. I hadnt played Catan in over 2 months and it felt good to be back at it. After that game, we played a round of Carcassonne, which wouldnt you know it, the new guy to the game, Don, ended up winning after we kept on coaching him what the smart moves to make with his tiles were. Around 11, Craig and I popped in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and worked our way through a few worlds. After which, we played a demo of Pokémon Rumble and then he let me try out some of Wii Sports 2. Both proved to be more fun than I expected, but then I noticed it was past 3 AM and I said thanked him for having me and headed home. But this really isnt about games.
I was excited when I left because a light blanket of snow covered the ground. Ive always been a fan of taking nighttime strolls and it was a great night for a walk around the block. It would be just like the morn of New Years day 2008 when I last walked my block in snow under a pink sky. You know the kind of pink sky Im talking about, moonlight not quite penetrating the cloud line as it snows yet its light out as the snow on the ground reflects it all. The New Years day story, which I find funny in a sad sort of way, is a story for another time. But after dilly dallying on the computer for half and hour or so, I posted a fast book status saying I was going for a walk. At 3:45 a.m., I set off into the night with winter coat, scarf, hat on head, and cell phone for music listening.
So I started off, Castlevanias Crystal Teardrops leading the music list on my phone. Ive found that Castlevania music is extremely suit for nighttime walks. As I turned the second corner I decided that I wanted a bit more out of my journey and that the New Years Journey was too short for tonight. For those following with the map, point 1 is where you can connect the red and magenta lines to form the old New Years Journey. If you havent looked at the map yet, please due so and youll see just how far I walked. Brave Adventurers started playing. Ive found that the World of Goo soundtrack is perfect for almost any task and it this case it was an uplifting melody against the cold. Ill just get to the top of the hill and come back down a different route. Soon I started really enjoying being outside and I wanted to extend my walk even further. Man, I should be a total creeper and walk to Alexs house and then to Halings and then return. This slipped through my mind and soon enough, I went with it. I am a bit of a creep sometimes but I feel that thats ok since I never mean any harm or to make anyone feel uncomfortable. At this point, my thoughts turned to Andrew posting on Alexs FB wall some time ago an XKCD comic he liked.
[link] Its spontaneity charmed me and with it in mind, I continued to Alexs in hopes that such a late visit, such an adventure would be seen by others in light of having fun. And thus the red line comes to an end, and we get to Alexs.
Let me set the stage for you. Arthas, My Son, the song without the speech in this video
[link] was playing off my phone as I walked onto Alexs street. Its an awe inspiring song when its snowing and youre by yourself in an otherwise very quiet world. Whats more is Alexs house is at the top of a hill making arrival with the song, and the fact that I was trespassing, rather intimidating. But fun. I stood around, replaying the song over and over again wondering what, if anything I was going to do now that I was this far from home. Cue the purple line.
I had never been very far down Alexs street and I only speculated as to where it leads. I walked down the street admiring the Christmas lights on the houses and then I saw the island at the bend in the street where I do my little loop around. The fun part of that was having the Castle music playing Super Mario 64 while I ran around the loop stretching out my arms like wings. I was having fun on my walk. I took off my hat letting my hair just keep my head warm for the rest of the night it was fun. Finally, back at Alexs I wanted to leave some sign that I was there, so I approached the mailbox with snow on it. I thought about putting my initials in the snow and saying they I was there but I didnt want to scare anyone. So I left the first symbol of good faith that I thought of. There is, at the time of writing this, a Triforce etched into the snow on top of the mailbox. And it was time to leave. Light Blue Line time. Also, more Arthas, My Son.
Started back, still feeling guilty of trespassing I passed a tree at point 3. That was a really large tree and looked strangely majestic in the lighting. At the same time it was intimidating as well. No wonder Durkon Thundershield is scared of them. Now I got on the longest of the treks down my walk, luckily, I had some great fitting music playing that with Deference for Darkness playing as I walked down that long road, passing under a streetlight showing all the snow every once and again.
[link] I really kind of did feel like the Rookie in Halo 3: ODST as he explores the dark streets of New Mombasa. Only, instead of the lighting being all dark and with red lights, it was the aforementioned pink sky and reflecting snow leading me through the dark. Man, I love that saxophone.
I started saying Hamlets famous To Do or Not To Do soliloquy to myself. If there was one class in High School that I could retake multiple times, it was that one. Strange, especially since it represented my first B grade on a report card ever. But the class was a lot of fun.
Dick Gumshoes theme plays, an uplifting Mega Man 2 song, Draculas Tears, Dreams of Triumph, and Earth City, En Taro Adun, and Eradicate and Evolve all play off the phone making the walk feel great. Point 4 on this is where I start to explore again, happy to see a street I had never been down in the 9.5 years Ive lived in Michigan. Turns out that condominium area wasnt very interesting so I quickly turned around.
Reach Halings house. Didnt want to dawdle due to previous stalking around his house. Still, I did etch a Triforce out of the snow on his mail box too. The Orange route starts and I take the street down past point 5. Ive never seen this street before and a rather unnerving thing happened on it. As Mega Mans 9s Galaxy Man theme plays, this truck across the street honks twice as a proximity alarm was set off. The truck is covered in snow, no one was getting into it or upsetting the snow, and the truck just starts its engine. I continued walking but every time I looked back, the truck was still idling on its driveway. Ghost truck, clearly.
As I approach the magenta line, Howling Fjord plays off the phone, neatly matching the snow fall in my mind. Im expecting to just walk down this long street and head straight home at this point, but the woods stop me. Ive not been in those woods since probably the 5th grade and I missed the stream that ran through it. In the maps case, point 6 represents where I walked along the river and played Ihojin No Yaiba over and over and over again. The woods brought back a nice memory of mine, at one point a younger Michael and his friend Grant imagining themselves as heroes out of the Lord of the Rings, fighting with toy swords and suction cup arrows and bows in the woods. As I cross over the stream, run through the woods and take time to admire it all, I take the time to make some Sword of the Stranger jokes to myself. As I emerge from the wood, Im ready to start heading back.
At one point, the Cat Bus song from My Neighbor Totoro plays. The movie has quite a bit of sentimental value to my since it was my first introduction to anime probably at the age of 4 or 5. Ive not actually shown it to anyone though. Its the one movie Im afraid to see receive any kind of bad criticism on, which, on a totally unrelated topic, if anyone wants to watch Ricki-Oh: The Story of Ricky over our break, hit me up. Oh, thats a joke, theyre nothing alike in quality or direction, My Neighbor Totoro is a Miyazaki film. Enough said.
As I go around the Cul-de-sac at point 7, Im retracing my steps on New Years day. Ive always liked that Cul-de-sac the most in my neighborhood due to its seclusion. At point 8, my phone tells me its low on battery, a message of it trying to tell me to get home and to sleep. Its 8:25 now and I think Ill listen to it finally. Total elapsed walking time, 2 hours and 10 minutes.
